The Sandbrook Vaults
The Community Pub in the Heart of Town

History of the Pub
This remarkable example of Tudor housing was rebuilt in the original style in 1651 after it had been burnt down in the 'Great Fire of Market Drayton'. This fire started in a small bakery not far from the pub's site.
Once the building was complete it was used as a licensed premises, although sometime after the end of the 19th century it changed from being a victualler selling wholesale and retail rare old wines and spirits to the public house it still is today.
We believe that the name of the pub was derived from the Sandbrook family that owned the property from at least the beginning of the 19th century well into the 20th century. Legend also has it that there was once a tunnel leading from the cellar of the property to the vaults of the nearby St Mary's Church.
Unfortunately, we have been unable to find out as much information as we would like to about the property. Anybody wishing to share stories, fables or other interesting facts can e-mail us with this information, we would be glad to hear from you.
